Hello! My name is James Schelberg and I am an undergraduate student at Washington College. To begin with, I have an uncommon passion for philosophy and learning as well as a love for the Latin language. My interest in philosophy began in 2006, interestingly enough, while deployed to Iraq with the Marine Corps Reserve. There I learned, among many other things, that some of the most demanding situations require sound critical, analytic and moral reasoning. Upon my arrival home in 2007 I enrolled at Washington College, where I focused heavily on philosophy and literature. In my two years there I earned a 4.0 GPA and dedicated large portions of my summers to extra curricular programs involved with philosophy and local Maryland history. This past year, I took a break from my studies to go on another deployment (this time to Afghanistan).
Before I return to Washington College this fall, I would love to share my love of philosophy and Latin with some fellow learners, no matter what age. I strongly believe that both subjects are appropriate for any grade level, and that the academic and cognitive skills they develop in students are invaluable. My pedagogical approach to the subject matter would vary depending on the goals and experience of the student, as well as the complexity and difficulty of the text. The one thing that I would hope to convey to every learner in every session is the inherent utility and beauty of philosophy and inquiry.
Having less educational and professional experience than the other tutors on this website, I am prepared to help out any students for a reasonable and affordable rate: $12-$15/hour. Honestly, I enjoy philosophy so much that I may tutor for free but I need some cash to help pay for gas!
