I prefer to take a steady approach to teaching. Students work best when the setting is relaxed and prepared. I want my students to know what to study ahead of time and what subjects we will be covering while together. I can dress professional to everyday casual if the student expects a more professional appearance or a relaxed, less formal atmosphere.
I spent more than a year teaching at a learning center called Vickery Meadows and helped many young women and men learn basic English and enjoyed it immensely. I was fortunate to be able to offer help to students also working for American citizenship. I worked with a teaching partner and we spent as much time as necessary with students that wanted to remain after class ended to help them with problems or just common questions about the quirky English language. We taught a class between 10 and 20 people that varied in ability so we needed to be versatile and ready to adjust should some students fall behind while others asked for more advanced lessons. We used a series of textbooks and workbooks but often spent time addressing problems outside the scope of the text, like the differences between "you're" and "your".
Before I really begin to delve into the subject matter, I like to know where my students are in terms of comprehension. I want first to understand them then design an approach suitable to their abilities. Many students wish to learn specific things and I want to accommodate them fully. It is critical for a teacher to understand exactly what is their student's desires and how best to aid them in achieving their goals, whether it's enough English to conduct business, converse with others casually or apply for citizenship.
I welcome questions and know that an hour spent addressing a small problem can be every bit as valuable as covering a new subject like Shakespearean poetry or the history of the American Civil War.
