Why I want to tutor ESL: I have lived in France, Japan, and England so I know what it's like not to know the language and the culture. I know what it's like to want to improve as fast as possible so that you can be a better student, worker, or fit in better socially. I can help you improve your English quickly, while also making sure you don't miss important steps along the way. Learning English is not easy, but by relating what we are learning to your life and culture we can make our classes interesting.
About me: I have been an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/ESL) teacher for 5 years and a department head for 2 years. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for 2 years in Japan and for 6 months in France. While I have only tutored a few students for compensation, I have tutored many students at my schools during lunch and after school for free. I have also taught a support class where all students received individual tutoring for their classes. I have a masters in Education and I frequently participate in professional development workshops to stay current on the best ways that students learn.
About my classes/tutoring sessions: I have experience working with students of all English levels, but I have the most experience with complete beginners of any language. I will begin by assessing your skills and then I will create an individualized plan. All plans include reading, writing, speaking and listening but the amount of time spent on each area will depend on your individual needs. Your plan may also include culture instruction and suggestions for how you will continue to work on your English skills when you are not in our tutoring sessions. I am available to work with individual students or with small groups of up to 4 students.
