I love learning and love helping others learn! Every student presents unique challenges, and explaining basic concepts to somebody new makes the subject new and exciting for me too. When I'm tutoring, I'm learning, and when I'm learning, I can't wait to teach somebody else.
My Experience:
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in computer science, I started tutoring in the Academic Skills Center at UWEC and discovered it was a hidden talent. While working at UWEC, I gained experience with a variety of learning and developmental disabilities, including Asperger's syndrome, visual impairment, brain damage, and dyscalculia. I also worked at Chippewa Valley Technical College before beginning to tutor privately. My experience includes working with elementary through adults, and I am prepared to tutor basic math, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, statistics, calculus, formal logic, physics, chemistry, reading, spelling, grammar, computer science, computer literacy, French, and test preparation. I am also available for academic enrichment activites, such as teaching mental calculation and performing science demonstrations.
My Tutoring Style:
My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. My original study aids and mnemonics help students remember details. I personalize my tutoring methods based on personality and learning style. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, analogies, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems, which promotes greater confidence in their own abilities. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. Learning can be hard work at times, but I strive to make it exciting and rewarding.
My References:
Students I have tutored in the past have said I “was familiar with the subject matter and made [them] feel comfortable,” “was very flexible and was able to explain things in a way that was more understandable,” and “was great to work with!” Please contact me for a letter of recommendation from my former supervisor at UWEC.
