Hello Students! My name is Jon (aka Mr. K) and I have been teaching upper level science (Earth Science and Oceanography) for nearly a decade. Like most college-graduates, when I graduated from Mary Washington College in 2001, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I decided to start subbing at my old high school, Stonewall Jackson High, in Manassas. After receiving a full-time, provisional position in 2002, I realized my newfound love of the profession. When I started teaching, I was 22 years old. I could relate to the students on a personal and professional level and found my job very easy. Nearly ten years later, my fear of becoming "jaded" towards the education system has (thankfully) never been realized. My demeanor and relaxed, yet effective teaching methods and skills have persevered through the years and I find myself loving my job more and more each year. I feel this excited attitude I have towards my subject area has made me a better teacher in the eyes of both my superiors, as well as my students. I take a very hands-on approach to my lesson plans and involve the student in every way possible. I try to make learning fun for my students, because it sure is a lot of fun for me. I'd like to think that my recent passing rate of 94% for the 2008-09 Virginia SOL reflects this attitude, however much of the credit goes to my fantastic students last year...after all, they're the ones that took the test in the first place. Besides my 8 years of teaching experience, I also have nearly 3 years of tutoring and homebound-instruction experience. I spend my free time playing the drum set and other percussion instruments (I have been in two jazz bands, three rock bands, and one indie/folk rock band), playing disc golf, and scuba diving. My summers are spent keeping my scuba instruction business up and running. My entire life revolves around teaching...whether it be high school students or scuba students...and I wouldn't want it any other way. There is something to
