I am an experienced Special Education teacher with a Masters Degree in Education. I have worked with a variety of student populations, namely LD, ADHD, EBD. It is impossible to say which tutoring style I use because every student has a different learning preference and required individualized ways to access information. A multi-sensory approach is best until learning style is established (i.e. a combination of visual and auditory delivery of information). I believe self-esteem is the foundation for academic achievement. I also believe I can reach every child by providing positive reinforcement and creating opportunities for success. Children learn best when they feel capable of excelling and certain of their performance. My goal is to demonstrate for students that their attempts equate to success, consequently stimulating their passion for learning and creating intrinsic motivation. Believing in students and setting high but realistic expectations are essential elements of being an effective teacher. Because every student has their own learning style and preference, I will create a learning environment and lessons that accommodate diverse learning processes and multiple intelligences at a time. Offering a universally designed, multisensory buffet of experiences, and connecting such experiences to prior knowledge, leads students to own their learning. Students are more likely to understand, enjoy and remember information presented to them if they are able to relate it to real-life experiences.
