My tutoring style is based mainly on my belief that students must feel comfortable and safe before they are able to learn. It is because of this that I try to use humor (appropriately, of course) to put students at ease so they can focus on the learning task at hand. I also know that a student who is not afraid of making mistakes will take more risks on their journey of learning. If a student is terrified of giving a wrong answer, they may not want to try at all. This is why I make sure my students know that making mistakes is not a bad thing, provided that they do their best to learn from them. I believe in providing a caring environment where students can feel safe and at ease in order to maximize learning. When tutoring, my methods vary by student. I use only research based practices, though they change based on the learning style and needs of each student. My tutoring experience ranges in age, though generally revolves around the Elementary level. I was a Nanny/Tutor during the summer of 2006 for two children. In this position I tutored the 13 year old (8th grader) in mathematics and keyboarding and helped the 8 year old (2nd grader) with his reading decoding and comprehension skills. I also tutored a third grader in mathematics to help build skills beyond the third grade level. I tutored a 7 year old (1st grader) in all subjects periodically throughout the school year as needed. In addition to tutoring experience, I completed my student teaching in a fourth grade classroom. I have also had field experiences in a second grade classroom and in sixth grade language arts and mathematics classrooms. I completed the teaching program at the College of Education of Northern Illinois University in 2009. The one thing I love the most about teaching is seeing the progression of abilities in my students. Knowing that my students’ confidence grows with every accomplishment gives me joy as a teacher.
