I have always loved Physics. It was my favorite subject in school. It's ability to answer most interesting questions by giving you concrete proof had me mesmerized. But, as I grew older and studied specialized subjects, I realized that I was more and more in love with mathematics, its beauty, and its rationality. Since then, I have been tutoring youngsters and my classmates just for the sheer love for the subject. I did my MS in computer science and gained experience in tutoring Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus to some of my friend's siblings. In this process, I discovered that each tutoring session must have: #1. a thorough and clear explanation of the basics. #2. a constant encouragement to students to learn by making the subject interesting & easy to follow, #3. and, having them practice enough sets of problems. Mathematics is all about practicing. It is certain that after some practice, a student starts seeing solutions to problems as patterns and thus, gains more confidence in his/her problem solving skills. More practice also instills a certain level of discipline that students need in order to achieve anything in life (a lot of teachers confuse discipline with rigidity which I disapprove of; they try to mold the student according to their ways instead of doing it the other way round.) I provide individually designed problem sets according to each student's level of understanding, and, I start each session with a short, quick paced, light hearted test right at the beginning of the next session to see whether the student understood the taught concepts or not; also, giving regular tests help students get over test anxiety. I usually go through a student's failed attempts at solving a problem, as it is these failed partial solutions that show how a student approaches a problem. Tracking their failed solutions also encourage students to try a problem in different ways which opens up their mind to problem solving.
