Summary -
My emphasis areas are math and physics from introductory through advanced college level courses, and first year chemistry. I also tutor how to do well on standardized tests like the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).
Details - Depending on your needs for tutoring, my style is flexible.
Whether your objective is to take a required class not in your major, change fields, or find ways to max an entrance exam, I have the patience to explain material at several levels, or to fine-tune details of your core specialty. If you need just enough help to get through the class, I can explain the basics. Or I can go beyond that to help explain material at a level to be a foundation for a career.
One of my favorite books about the learning process is "Chess for Success", by Maurice Ashley. A chapter covers details of Bloom's Taxonomy, a hierarchy of learning levels. The fundamental knowledge level is the ability to recall information such as definitions and formulas. The next higher level is comprehension, the ability to put definitions and formulas together in known ways to produce accurate results. Beyond that is application, the ability to apply information in new situations, which is something some grad school entrance exams try to test.
The GRE and MCAT tests cover a lot of details from the first few years of college and I can help with the basic material as well as some of the shortcuts to get accurate and timely answers in the fast pace of the exam. However shortcuts are not always the way to enhance understanding of the material -- and I can help contribute to understanding for grad school classes as well.
Typically I know of more than one way to solve a problem and can customize to your learning style. Though my core areas are math and science, because of my computer background I can help with courses involving applied math on computers. Feel free to surprise me if there is something apart from the standard first- and second- year classes that you might have questions with.
Of course, I would want to know the areas you want to cover up front before the session so I can review the material prior to meeting.
My tutoring style -
My meeting times are flexible, and I am open to either being on call as needed, or following a set schedule if that is better for you.
During a tutoring session, I could solve problems presented to me. In that mode, I like to go one step at a time, and let the student suggest the next step toward a solution. However, I can also present a solution to a problem and have you trace back the steps to get there.
In summary, my math and science background, along with my ability to communicate the material, has prepared me to do well as your tutor!
