Many tutors stick to a course plan, or follow a textbook of their choice. My philosophy is totally different: I ask my students to identify some of their "problem areas" before we even begin our sessions together or plan our study path. That way, we can work as a team and zero in on what is preventing them from doing well in school. By attacking the most difficult challenges first, and "defeating" them one by one, the students gain confidence and their class participation improves. Test results matter: I need to see their worst and most recent tests and quizzes, because they will provide clues to identify the areas that need the most work. Student efforts should be rewarded, so I try to present each of my students with a useful gift if they have faithfully done the homework assigned and actually improved their grade levels.
