Most of my previous tutoring experience has been in tutoring my peers, especially in math. I am currently seeking a degree from the University of North Texas in EC - 6th grade Generalist and all level Special Education.
I understand that each student learns in a different manner, and I try to find the most effective method of teaching for each individual. I focus on teaching concepts rather than memorization. I do not believe any content is mastered unless the student can understand the principles behind the data. Memorizing a formula may net an "A" on the test, but once the test is over, the formula is quickly forgotten. Conversely, if a student understand why the formula works, that understanding remains forever.
I will never "give" my students the answer, because I do not believe that tutors should be a homework service. Of course, this doesn't mean that I will not help with homework--I will absolutely give each student whatever support he or she needs to arrive at the correct answer.
Especially when teaching math, I usually use a mixture of leading questions and content knowledge to help my students achieve understanding of the material.
