I usually start off with looking over the student's past assignments to see where he/she is having difficulties or misunderstandings. Then I narrow in by addressing them and showing examples. Then I ask the student to help me work out a problem to make sure that he/she is following. Once the student understands, I will let the student work on his/her own. Then I check the work. If there are still problems, then I try to explain in a different way. After the student can successfully complete the assignment, I briefly sum up what the student has done (for closure).
