As a math tutor primarily, my philosophy is pretty simple. Every math problem can be broken down into smaller, more manageable problems that are easier to understand. When understood, solving a math problem becomes more like a recipe for baking a cake than remembering a meaningless formula. A recipe can be more easily remembered than a formula because the brain understands why each step of the recipe has to be done and how it will help reach the end product. When trying to memorize a formula, it doesn't fit into one's logical understanding of how things work and is easily forgotten.
Even the students that struggle the most have shown me that they can have just as many "aha" moments as stronger students when they understand how to solve a problem. Given enough time, a below average student can understand honors level problems once the recipe for solving the problem is understood from start to finish. I'm constantly impressed with what my "less skilled" students can achieve. Whatever skills you have or don't have, you can rest assured that I've almost certainly had students that were in worse shape than you!
For every tutoring session, we will typically work on homework(s) or prepare for an upcoming exam. Either way, my approach for each session is pretty much the same. First, I will find where the missing gaps are in the student's understanding of the concepts from class and then find problems that will help fill in those gaps. I will explain the "recipe" for solving the problem, and then change the numbers and see if they can repeat the recipe I just showed them. When students struggle, I like to ask a lot of little questions that will help point the student in the right direction when it's their turn to solve a problem. The more a student figures out on their own when asked the right questions, they will remember more than when I just tell them the answer.
