I began volunteer tutoring at Saint Petersburg College in summer 2007, and have continued to do this work to present. At SPC I get first-hand experience teaching students how to improve their composition and research skills. I realize how unique each student’s writing is and I try to support them in getting their voice heard: “A mind is a fire to be kindled, not a vessel to be filled.” (Plutarch). I remember this quote when I am teaching so that I don’t try to change the student’s context, but rather incite them to improve upon it.
The students who come in for help are in a variety of courses, such as Creative Writing, History and Speech. I really enjoy working with the students who range in age, from early 20s to late 50s. Every person comes in with frustration, but leaves with a sense of accomplishment. I usually only have 1 or 2 students at a time, so it is easy to give each person the needed attention.
During the summer 2008 term I was a Teacher's Assistant at the University of South Florida in Dr. Conner's Composition II course. This course provided an interactive and intimate environment between students and instructors through online communication. I was able to stay an active participant by reading students' posts and joining conversations. During class I led discussion amongst groups and reviewed their writing assignments.
In addition to working with students on their writing, I have improved my own writing skills in my graduate courses. In the fall 2008 semester I took a composition course that primarily created rubrics and assessed the writing of students at USFSP. This course was made up of 6 students (3 undergraduates and 3 graduates) that collaborated with faculty and writing coordinators at the university to develop new rubrics to be used across subject areas.
After graduating in December 2008, I started working at a Huntington Learning Center where I tutor elementary, middle and high school students.
