As a teacher and private tutor, I've learned to foster a safe, non-threatening environment which is most conducive to learning. Even as a student, I recognized the value and impact of trust and encouragement. Learning is not easy. It requires not only patience and diligence, but a certain emotional attachment between teacher and student. The teacher, moreover, should be able to demonstrate the importance of the material. If it hasn't made a difference in the teacher's life, why should it matter to the student?
I've always felt a profound, if inexplicable, connection to language, in general, and to Hebrew, in particular. It would be my honor, and my delight, to help you discover the world that exists uniquely in Hebrew, whether it be modern, rabbinic, or Biblical. I've taught all three in a variety of settings: the formal classroom (synagogues, and UCLA), small groups, and individual tutoring. I've taught reading fundamentals, Hebrew grammar, and modern and ancient Hebrew texts. I've taught children, young adults, and senior citizens. I am not a native speaker, but I have a solid grasp of Hebrew grammar, and I'm confident that, together, we can achieve a complete understanding of any text presented in a high school or college classroom.
Prior to studying at UCLA for my Master of Arts degree in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, I spent a year studying Hebrew at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. I graduated at the top of the class not because I was smarter than the other students, but because I loved the language for the window it provided to thought. I came to understand two linguistic principles to which I refer constantly: (1) Language enables thought; (2) Nothing comes from nowhere.
