I have been tutoring for about a year. The subjects I have taught are as follows: Algebra, physics, earth science, geometry and accounting. During my year of tutoring, I have had students with a myriad of needs. My first student wanted her daughter to test out of algebra when she started high school. I had the summer to teach her algebra and find a way to condense a years worth of material into a summer and have her retain it. My next student needed help with homework and projects. Currently, I have an accounting student who needs to pass the class. I have found that different techniques work better than others in different situations. Tutor sessions that I conduct are very flexible and focus on the students needs. They can range from teaching the subject in a different way to helping with homework to test preparation. My approach to tutoring is repetition. I try to find or create a step approach that applies to all problems and is easy to implement. I have found that when you use a step approach, it tends to eliminate some of the errors that can be made, especially with more complex problems. When complex problems are broken down into steps, it creates a starting point for students when they feel stuck. More importantly, this enables similarity between problems and can eliminate confusion as the problems get progressively harder. Lastly, to the student, all problems will look the same, even if they are different. You can give a student different problems and if they apply the steps, they will find success. After steps are implemented, the best path to remembering them is repetition. Problem after problem helps the student remember the steps, see how they are applied and to see the relationships in problems. I have found that this technique works well. If homework help is not the needs of the student and they need help understanding concepts, I usually apply different techniques. These range from understanding how the subject was taught, figuring out why it was confusing and then trying to teach the concept in a different more elementary way.
I do not believe tutoring should be a cookie cutting process. Every student is different and every student learns differently and at a different pace. I think the most important aspect is to get to know the student and understand how they think. This way you can almost anticipate what they may need help with and planning a lesson will be easier and more effective that way.
