I am Vaibhav Deshpande a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering Department at UW Madison. I have been a Teaching assistant for the past three semesters now, for courses like Mechanics of Materials and Mechanics of Materials laboratory. Currently I am TA/instructor of Mechanics of Materials lab and I am teaching 3 sections of that course (roughly 60 students). My primary responsibilities are lecture preparation, presenting the material in class, giving actual lab demonstrations for the test, performing tests with undergrads, exam preparation and grading. Last semester I found out that my handwriting was not clear from the back so during the winter break I created presentations for the lab which have been helpful for the students as they don’t have to frantically write things down from the board, and they can now focus on what I am teaching. Also the same presentations work as good reference notes for preparing for quizzes and exams.
I also conduct frequent informal feedback reviews, in which I create an informal web survey where I ask students questions about the teaching methods that I am employing in class to find the out what works best for them. I also try to imprint some extra knowledge that I have gained over the years through courses or practical experience, to generate student interest about the subject.
