Hello, my name is Rosaria Bellu. I am a math tutor and teacher with classroom experience, private tutoring and home schooling.
What I have learned during these years is that each student is different, and the tutor needs to understand the reality they live in, what shaped them in order to perceive and make a long lasting impact in the way that person thinks. Part of my passion for teaching comes from my desire to witness the instant when a student finally grasps the essence of a new idea. Teaching mathematics is particularly challenging, and given all the misconceptions, it makes my desire to teach greater.
My tutoring style focuses on true commitment, preparation, love, tolerance, humility, and absolutely no impatience. My greatest responsibility as a tutor is to device a plan that is personalized and effective for the student, and maintain open lines of communication with parents regarding concerns, ideas, and thoughts. Overall as a tutor, I pave the road to the concepts without giving away solutions. I like to ask questions to force the child to participate and explain his or her thoughts.
Initially, I evaluate the student by evaluating their grades in order to draft an assessment test. Also helpful, is to have the students’ latest work: tests, quizzes, homework made available to me by the first lesson.
On the first day of tutoring I have the student complete a brief assessment test, while I will immerse myself in the students’ work to identify their strengths and weaknesses and by the end of the first day I will have a general idea of what needs to be addressed and how much time needs to be allocated to reach these results. It is important that the assessment test and first day evaluation are as informal as possible in order to set a genial tone to the work ahead.
With initial evaluation behind me, textbooks and worksheets will be selected to use according to the situation. In general, whenever feasible my lesson plans use simple language, and real life examples that are relevant to the students and sometimes even fun. Most of my lessons are planned to have the student derive and explain the concepts, using repetition: read, rewrite, solve and draw what is learned. Also, I encourage the student to keep a binder to collect their work, and to write the math formulas, (with few examples for each formula), on a poster board and place it on their wall.
Later, I patiently work at building long lasting skills and competence by reinforcing and integrating the concepts learned. At the right pace, and with the support of the parents, I will introduce new ideas to dramatically improve the student skills in the following months and reach the goals set by the end of the school year.
