stephanie's Professional Information

I am a retired science teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience.  I have tutored privately for many years assisting students from 6th grade to 12th grade.  My expertise is in Biology (Living Environment), Forensic Science, and all levels of middle school science.  I have also tutored students for the SAT II in Biology.  During the last ten years I have taught students on home bound instruction.

My feeling is that each student is an individual and should be taught in a way that en-chances their strengths and improves their weaknesses.  I like to use a variety of tools such as the computer, puzzles, and visual aids.  

I have also worked for the past nine years for a preschool school for children with delayed language problems.  I have been employed by the Barbara C. Wilson School that caters mainly to children with autism.  This experience has given me a many important tools to deal with students with disabilities.  Many of these young people had a constellation of problems with which I had to deal.  Some of these issues were oppositional disorder, learning disabilities, and a host of different emothional disorders. 

During my years in the public schools I was responsible for instituting many new programs such as programmed learning.  This program involved creating programs by which students could work on their own to learn the subject matter.  The students were closely supervised by the teachers in the room.  I was also involved in an inclusion program that brought severely disabled students into the regular classroom.  This required teaching to a variety of levels in one classroom. 

Being patient and understanding are an important attributes to success as a teacher especially on a one to one basis.  Respect is also essential for success.  Since I have these characteristics, I have been extremely successful as a tutor.
