My teaching style is catered to students based on two main types of understanding: intuition and procedure. I focus on teaching for understanding and then for procedure. In my experience, I find teaching for understanding to be a powerful tool. Not only do students score higher, but they often adopt a new style of learning which allows them to succeed without a tutor. I realize that some subjects are difficult to grasp and so a 'procedural' style of teaching is needed. This 'how-to' style of teaching breaks down complex problems into simple check lists.
Overall I teach a learning style which allows the student to self-teach. This ability is an important trait for higher education and research. Not only does it improve homework and test scores, but it decreases the dependency upon an instructor and tutor. An effective method of studying is also important and will be taught.
In my time at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, I was busy with military, academic, and athletic obligations. Majoring in a subject which takes most students 5 years to complete, I learned how to effectively manage time. I try to incorporate my experiences in my teaching method. I understand that most students have several other competing priorities and I seek to improve the efficiency of study and work habits. This is especially true for test-studying. Working and studying efficiently lets students focus on other areas of their lives.
