I've studied Latin and Ancient Greek for 9 and 5 years respectively at a Benedictine Monastery in Bavaria and graduated with a specialization on both languages. Already at school, but particularly during university studies, I have been teaching extensively in both languages az well as German and Italian, covering all stages of learning, from beginners to pre-university enrollment.
As might be deducible from my background, I am a conservative teacher focusing on perfecting the knowledge of grammar, which is the source of most problems in both classical languages and is where tutors can achieve most. My usual procedure is therefore to set up a plan in close consultation with both parents and student, which sets out the steps necessary to improve, especially regarding eventual problems with the vocabulary. By first drawing on the most elementary vocabulary and building up from there I try to assure that catching up with the rest of the class can be achieved mostly in a two months period.
At the same time, I try to develop in the student an understanding of the logic of the language and to establish a systematic individual approach to addressing it. Especially in Latin and Classical Greek experience has shown me that the lack of such an approach is the root of many students' difficulties, and can be only solved by commonly developing a strategy that fits the individual needs of the student.
While this is my methodology for the lingual aspect, I further try to develop the necessary general interest in classical culture which has to accompany the study of each "dead" language. While this is often difficult for teachers in a classroom context featuring a broad variety of students with diverging interests, one-on-one tutorials offer the potential to "tailor" this motivational aspect to the individual interests of the student.
