I have been tutoring children in preschool and elementary school for 15 years.
I have owned a daycare and preschool for 10 years. I am married with five daughters from ages 7 to 20.
My youngest child is in 2nd grade and my oldest is a sophmore in college.
I have attended Purdue Extension Program to receive my CDA as well as taken classes at Ivy Tech Community College.
I enjoy reading and helping children learn. My favorite moment is the "light bulb' moment when a child finally "gets it" during a tutoring session. Seeing a child feel confident and want to learn is one of the most rewarding things to me.
I believe learning should be fun. I use a variety of objects and tools to teach the children. I believe children learn best in a relaxed, fun envirnoment.
I use a hands on approach to tutoring. First I find the missing link or weakness of the student. Once we fix the missing link, we build on their knowledge from that point.
I believe every child needs to be told they can do it and help them reach their goals to accomplish anything they set their mind to.
I have a daughter with Dyscalculia ( math blindness). Since discovering her learning disability I have found many new ways to teach elementary math to children in a fun easy to understand way.
My daughter use to hate math because she could not learn fro a teacher standing up teaching. She had to have visuals, things to touch and she needed the lesson to go slower.
Some examples of how I make learning fun:
We set up a candy store. We use real money. My daughter had to add up the cusotmers ( other children) order with pencil and paper, give correct change and bag the candy. This made her want to learn math because it dealt with real life things she could touch. This activity made math real for her. Since then we have used many different things to learn math. She no longer hates math, she loves it. She has become faster doing math and more confident.
I have used M&M candy to teach her multiplication and divison as well as many more things.
I am fortunate to be able to use my preschool room after hours and on weekends for my tutoring. This blessing makes many more hands on objects, toys amd manipulatives available to me as well as an old overhead, dry erase boad, computers and more.
