I am committed to a holistic approach with all students, especially those within their beginning years of schooling. I am also interested in a therapeutic approach with all students, especially those with learning, behavioral, and emotional disabilities.
I recently was teaching the eighth grade science curriculum in the Boston Public Schools, with students who are on IEPs (Individual Education Plans) to meet their emotional and learning disability needs. I also teach English Language Arts and Writing. I hold a Massachusetts Educator’s license in English and will acquire my ESL and Art license this autumn, and would like to obtain my license in early education. Before I began teaching, I worked in the Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston Public School systems in various positions such as a paraprofessional, summer camp counselor, substitute teacher, and teacher.
At the Savannah College or Art and Design, I engaged a rigorous curriculum in all forms of art instruction. My core classes included drawing and life drawing, graphic design, 2D design, sculpture, fashion and apparel arts, and color theory. Within those classes and electives, I mastered a wide range of materials and techniques that I would like to share with my students. While working, I noticed that my background in art was a benefit because it allowed me to give my students alternate ways of looking at the same issue. Also it was therapeutic for them to be able to express themselves in other ways.
I believe art has the power to touch our humanity and enrich our lives, and I would like to pass this enthusiasm on to my students. Art is able to cross all disciplines, bringing new and creative ways to think about everyday issues, while also giving confidence and a creative voice to students. I will be a valuable asset in this position by being able to utilize my knowledge of art, literature, and past experiences to communicate in an interesting manner other key concepts that the students need to grasp in order to advance to other areas in their growth.
In addition, my previous experience working with children and students of all ages imparted patience, flexibility, and problem solving skills. I am especially interested and feel a special desire to work with students in their beginning education to be ahead of the many challenges they face. I also understand that the job will be demanding, but I am committed to the students and ready to do whatever is necessary to be a really good teacher/tutor.
