 I have been teaching English, Creative Writing, and Journalism for the past seven years. I'm working on my Master of Fine Arts degree in Journalism. I try to bring humour and silliness to my teaching. When people are laughing and having a good time, their brains are more engaged and ready to learn. Difficult concepts can be broken down into parts and steps that are easy to learn and use in the classroom. It is my job as a tutor to share those steps and make the difficult become easy.

I am a follower of FISH Philosophy. The concept of chosing your attitude, being present in the moment, playing, and making other people's day is very important to me. Being positive and praising others is a key to success in the classroom and in life. One of my goals in life is to lead by example and encourage others.

I have worked with honors students that needed to be more challenged in their studies and pushed to find deeper understanding from their course work and I have worked with low-performing students that need more structure and guiduance to become better achieving in the classroom. This includes students that are several reading levels below grade level that made important advances during the time I worked with them.

It is my belief that a tutor's job is to assist a student in understanding the material they are currently struggling with and give them the tools to continue to achieve after tutoring is complete. Parents and teachers work together to present the importance of learning and growth through education and a tutor further reinforces those ideas.

Students learn in many ways and the traditional classroom environment is not designed to allow for all learning styles. A tutor helps those students that need to learn in another style get the time and guidence needed to master skills presented in the classroom.

I can and have created lesson and reading guides, can teach note taking and test taking skills, and offer ways to connect the classroom materials to real-life situations.
