My preferred tutoring style is one on one. This, in my experience, is a much better method. While I have tutored more than one student in a given family, it still is done one on one to give the student the maximum attention during the tutoring session. I have personnal resources that I have obtained during my previous tutoring experiences. These are grade level appropriate and fun for the student to use during the student session. I do like to use visual props, in math area, as an appropriate aid for the student to use. This is to help understand the problem before them. These props may also be flash cards that go to help the student in gaining speed and recognition of the correct answer. These are always approp[riate to lesson and grade level.
I like to tutor in a relaxed atmosphere so that learning can be fun. My philosophy is to have a relaxed learning experience. The student spends the day in a more stressful environment, therefore the tutoring session should not be an extension of school atmosphere. The session can reinforce and build on what is learned in class, but should be presented in a manner that would foster a positive action to the learning experience.
I have experience in tutoring K thru 5th grade during the previous school year. In addition, I have over twenty-four years as a substitute teacher. This has been in grades K-12. In tutoring, I have tutored students who are bi-lingual. This has not posed much of a problem since the students usually have a grasp of the English language. While I have a limited Spanish vocabulary, is does prove to be helpful at times. This has also helped in relaxing the student in that type of learning environment.
The students I tutored last year, all had increased by a minimum of 10% in both English and Math. I tutor for results.
