I am currently finishing up a Master’s in Education at Eastern Washington University. My area of endorsement is social studies but I have experience with statistics and ESL education. I particularly enjoy current events and geopolitics but I always avoid expressing any personal political views as they are detrimental to the education process and can harm critical thinking. I am confortable tutoring any social studies related topic. I am also uniquely qualified to assist with Psychology because my undergraduate degree is in developmental psychology and I have spent several years working with adolescents who have behavioral and mental disorders. Most of my tutoring experience comes from tutoring ESL students. I have tutored both refugees and international students. I enjoyed both experiences and hope to get the opportunity again someday. I also have some tutoring experience with basic subjects. I have done some tutoring with the previously mentioned behavioral disorder students. Most of this tutoring focused on basic writing, reading, math, and science skills. Despite the challenges of working with behavioral students I enjoyed the unique challenge.
The subjects I wish to tutor include basic math, English, science and social studies skills. Obviously, my experience lies with the social studies and English areas but I feel confident in my ability to help students through basic algebra.
If possible I prefer to know what I am going to be focusing on before I start tutoring. Experience has shown that if I have time to focus on an area and prepare that the students get more out of it. Knowledge of what the student is working on is not necessary however.
My tutoring style is one where I facilitate student learning by helping them solve problems they might be having with the material being studied. I have the student attempt to work out the problem and find out where they are having issues. Once I discover the problem location I direct the student’s attention to that area and attempt to help the student see the mistake their making themselves so they can solve it without me directly telling them what they are doing wrong. However, I acknowledge that some students prefer to be told what they’re doing wrong and will attempt to correct it with future problems. I am more than willing to accommodate students with this learning style as well. The key to effective tutoring in my opinion is adapting ones teaching techniques to fit the student in question. By default I use the first method mentioned but I will change and adapt my method as I learn more about your students learning style.
I hope this answers any questions regarding my abilities. Please feel free to contact me at any of the contact information provided. If I do not answer your call I will return it as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
