Tutoring basic computer skills begins with a lesson in the history of computing. From that point on, computer behaviors, actions and commands have a purpose that wasn't understood before. I have great success starting at the beginning as all studies should, and bringing the least confident computer users "up to speed" with their peers and family at work and at home.
Using a computer isn't difficult but it is daunting. The fear of breaking something is a healthy concern when using any technology; Windows based computers aren't so easy to break. They demand understanding and exploration and my students grin from ear to ear when they learn that all programs basically behave the same way. It's the history and terminology/jargon that is most intimidating. Thankfully, that's also the easiest to teach.
Few things about computers are theoretical or intangible. With computer languages and basic computing, specific input yields very specific output. With familiarity established, finding out a computer's abilities becomes a fun activity. I truly enjoy watching people learn and get that ah-ha moment again and again with all that computers have to offer!
Online tutoring is a great advance alone in using a computer. Connecting two desktops remotely adds convenience and opens a new speturm of time and locations for students and tutors alike. While chatting through little white boxes is still cumbersome, combining the telephone with remote tutoring is brilliant. Technology has moved forward so significantly to include things like unlimited long distance ensuring that ideas between people can stretch as far as possible.
Tutoring in person is still supreme for achieving the human connection that sponsors a faster development of learning new concepts and with some hardware, physical demonstration cannot be mimicked by online training. "Being there" is how teachers pass on some of the greatest skills on Earth. While computers and computer programming are binary, on/off yes/no functions, computer require human interaction. When that interaction is wrong physically, it can adversely affect how a computer or program behaves.
Personally, I'm capable of both fashions of teaching but prefer to be there in person. With strong internet connections so established nationwide, evolving the classes online to include video can add a dimension that comes closer to being there in person. People who make computers and computer programs work hard to make them match the human touch. So getting as close to teaching in person makes the learing process go much smoother.
Very new students are very brave for even having found this profile! I've started with people even too timid to have gotten this far and helped them surpass the expectations that others had hoped for them.
