My first priority is to find weaknesses. Relative to the curriculum, whether it is for the Regents or the SAT's, I provide a diagnosis of the student's skill level. I then provide a lesson based on examples and problem solving until I feel that the weakness has been fixed. This is done through demonstrating solutions with constant feedback and re-assessment of the topic. Typically I would start with some lecturing on the day's topic. I tailor the lecture to suit the student's interests and personality. This is especially important for Mathematics, as the subject is abstract and non-tangeable by nature. Therefore, it is extremely important to provide context. Visual ques are necessary such as understanding of the number line, of conceptualizing direct and inverse relationships, and of functions.
One area that is often in need of extra care is the geometric proof section. These problems challenge students because they demand logic and creativity, and a thorough mastery of the materials. It is important to provide many examples, just like learning a new language. An effective strategy is to make an exhaustive list of all the premises and a list of all the strategies needed to solve these problems.
To make the best use of time, it is necessary to assign homework for the students. These follow-up problems gel the solutions in the student's mind. Additionally, they give the challenge of problem solving without the help of an instructor. However, taking tests in the company of the instructor is also necessary so that criticisms can be made with regard to the student's test taking skills. His/her pace and timing can be analyzed during these sessions so that the student becomes more effecient at using the time given during tests.
Finally, the task of tutoring requires complete knowledge of the intricate solutions for each specific problem. Each question is unique and requires a different approach. There is required an amount of improvised performance as much there is of planning.
