I have a doctorate in mathematics and many years' high school and university teaching experience. I have worked as mathematics lecturer in both the California State University and the University of California systems. I have also taught at various community colleges and high schools. I have the most success with gifted and motivated students who want to understand advanced mathematical topics. Many years' of teaching have led me to believe that the only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. Although coherent lectures with illustrative examples are important, considerable learning also comes through ones own efforts at solving problems. I see the role of an educator as someone who facilitates this process. A good teacher is one who can understand and anticipate difficulties that a student may have and then find a way to resolve them. If a student is motivated and wants to learn, I can pretty much guarantee that the student will significantly improve their understanding of mathematics.
I usually begin each tutoring session by determining what the student is currently studying and identifying the problems that may have been encounted. I will then review the concept with the student and check that it has been understood. This usually consists of giving the student some elementary exercise to do and seeing if he/she can answer it correctly. Once I am certain that the concept is clear, I will return to the original problem that was giving the student difficulty and ask the student to redo the question. If this is done successfully, I will give the student a new question which is a variant of the one encounter to answer. This may be taken from the assigned text book or a past exam. Questions covering a concept can vary greatly and the more examples the student sees the more confident the student can be that he/she understands the concept.
