Hi, my name is Peggy and I'd like to stress how much I love teaching. It is the most satisfying way to share my knowledge and education. Moreover, I truly enjoy watching my students achieve and show improvement.
I specialize in test prep. The most important thing about these kind of standardized tests is that there are different strategies depending on the individual's goals. For example, if the student wants to get a 550 on the Math section on the SAT, I would emphasize focusing on the beginning questions since those are the easiest. However, if the student wants to get a 700, I'd emphasize speed and fluency in every single type of question they will throw at you.
Additionally, I prefer to meet the student and tutor face-to-face because it's very important to develop trust between the student and teacher. If the student trusts you, then he will listen to your advice and what's more, open up and ask questions. If the student is too afraid to ask questions because the tutor is intimidating, then the learning process will be much slower and less effective.
Aside from tutoring standardized tests, I have the most experience teaching elementary school children. I've taught in Atlanta's inner-city elementary schools for Emory READs since 2009, so I know how to deal with children. I adore kids and they find me very personable (perhaps because I'm so short), so it's very easy for me to develop a working relationship to students of ages 5-14. While I refuse to succumb to a student's common distracting strategies (whining, pleading, or bribing), I do try to make the material as engaging and easy to understand as possible.
Finally, I love writing papers. Even though I am nowhere near the level of a grammar fiend, I do know how to create a thorough thesis and back it up with ample evidence and explanations. Furthermore, I can help spin past experiences into lively narratives. Thus, I am qualified to tutor students in writing research/analytical papers and college essays. Feel free to ask me for writing samples.
I look forward to working with you!
Warm regards,
Peggy
