amy's Professional Information

I worked at the Tarrant County College South Campus tutoring lab during the 2010 spring semester. I tutored most of the students in algebra, but I also spent time helping students with their English and history papers.

I expect students to come prepared for each session. They should have their books, notes, homework, syllabus, and their last test (if available). I do not do the work for the student. When tutoring students in algebra, I will explain concepts and work using examples. I do an example and explain each step as I go. Then I do another example, but the student explains it as I go. Then I will have the student do an example and say (or write out) each step as they go. I expect the students to do their own homework. If they are having trouble with a certain concept then we will work more with examples out of the book. When helping students with their papers, they must have at least a rough draft finished before I will proofread it (this is to avoid accusations of cheating). I will go through the paper with the student and explain where corrections should be made or where rewriting is needed.

I love to help students improve their grades and their understanding. It is, however, a two-way street. I have had a student or two leave a session feeling confident in their understanding of the subject, only to come back the next week and have to relearn it. For a student to succeed they must practice what they learned outside of the tutoring session (even if that means doing more of the homework than the teacher requires). Do your homework before you get to the session--this way you will know exactly what you need help with during your session. During my time at the TCC tutoring lab, I observed that the students who came prepared for each session showed the most improvement in their grades. I had many students go from having a failing grade to high B's (and even a few A's).
