jacqueline's Professional Information

I recently graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University and received the Student of the Year Award from the Latin American Studies Department. The various activities in which I participated at Emory - mentoring minority students, tutoring in Spanish, Italian and math, and hosting prospective Hispanic students - all sparked my interest in working with students and pursing a career in education. These activities gave me a great introduction to teaching and taught me skills in having patience, explaining difficult concepts and encouraging students. I also maintained a 3.9 GPA while completing two majors in Latin American Studies and Anthropology and spending a year abroad in Buenos Aires.

Because of my desire to teach, I started tutoring in my senior year of high school and have always found this work very rewarding. I enjoy building trust and rapport with my students and helping them gain confidence in their academic abilities. Upon graduating from Emory, I was able to formally begin teaching at the Ben Franklin Academy, an private school that offers mostly one-on-one instruction, especially for students with unique needs and learning styles. At Ben Franklin Academy, I taught Spanish 4 and 5. Because of the advanced level, I was able to create most of the lesson plans myself without the limitation of a pre-designed course. I brought in many different mediums through which to teach Spanish, such as current Hispanic music, video clips with native Spanish speakers, and different types of literature including poems, short stories, and lyrics. I also created my own worksheets and exercises in order to teach the grammar topics while incorporating our vocabulary and theme in the lesson. After returning to Argentina in February of this year, I taught English to Argentine adults. This additional work in the field of education broadened my experience of teaching to all different age groups and increased my interest in working in adult education.

I have a creative and adaptive approach to tutoring. My ability to be creative and adaptive is a skill that has served me well in tutoring a wide range of subjects and ages. I have learned that no matter how much one prepares for classes, one can never know exactly how a student with respond to the material. Through this and similar experiences I learned that a creative and flexible approach to teaching is greatly beneficial to both the students’ enjoyment of and achievement in school. Because no two students are alike, I believe that tutor must be creative and flexible when it comes to their teaching style. By not being afraid to try something new or breaking away from the lesson plan, tutors can keep their students engaged and tailor the class for their needs.
