I am a former high school teacher of students with learning disabilities. In my classroom, I had a wide variety of skill levels, disabilities, and learning styles. At various times during my tenure in this position, I provided direct instruction in English, Math, and US History in one-on-one and small group settings. Aditionally, I provided remediation in reading, math, and English to help students build their skills. Homework support and test preperation were also daily duties I performed, as was preperation for and administration of the ISTEP, GQE, and SAT tests, providing all allowed adaptations.
Although most of my teaching experience has been in a high school special ed classroom, my degree is actually in Elementary Ed. Having returned to college after working 20 years as a secretary, I recognized that I needed to be as employable as possible upon graduation. To that end, I picked up teaching minors in Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies, Math, and Minor Disabilities (Special Ed K-12). During my four-year teacher training, I was regularly required to work with students at all levels - sometimes one-on-one, sometimes in small groups, and sometimes in a whole classroom setting under the guidance of a classroom teacher.
With my background in special ed, I am well aware of the differences in learning styles and the necessity to adapt lessons to meet the students' needs. I find that very often a combination of visual, auditory, and tactile stimulus is very effective in helping children learn. Additionally, in a tutoring environment, i.e. one-on-one, it is a fairly simple matter to focus on whatever learning style works best for a given student.
Much as I love teaching, I now find myself disabled and unable to handle the daily rigors of a classroom. That is why I have chosen to become a tutor. I hope to be able to continue impacting today's youth. I want to help children learn to love books and to recognize the importance of proper grammar and word usage both in writing and speaking.
