Hello,
I am currently a graduate student at the Mannes College of Music, which is part of The New School. I have three years private teaching and tutoring experience.
In my teaching, I really strive to cater to the individual learning styles of my students. I am always aware and observant of which learning and teaching techniques work well for the student (verbal, visual, repetetive, organizational, or hands-on to name a few) and try to focus on those techniques in subsequent sessions.
In addition, I like to agree upon a goal with my student - a sort of 'mission' for our tutoring sessions. I find that keeping this goal in mind helps the student stay motivated and focused. I believe that asking the student to give input on what he or she wants/needs to accomplish really engages them to think about their strengths and weaknesses within a given subject. It also gives them a sense of accountability for their own learning, which usually leads to better preparation for lessons.
When a student is self-aware of the areas where they need to improve, they become much more independent in their learning. I of course want to help the student with the given subject, but my ultimate goal is to help them become their own teacher, which is something they can take and apply to every aspect of their own life and career.
Finally, I like to establish an 'open air' policy with my students. This means that I commit to being honest with my students - I praise what they are doing well, and I also make sure that they know exactly what they need to do to improve in a tactful and supportive way. I also ask that my students give feedback about what methods work and don't work for them, and I give them the opportunity to suggest alternate ways to work on the material. Teaching, to me, is a collaborative effort. The best and most effective teaching experiences I have had were when both teacher and student were engaged in the material and working toward a common goal. In the real world, this does not always happen, but it is always something that I am working for.
