My name is Steven Whitwell. I hold a Graduate of Theology Degree from Trinity Baptist College, in Jacksonville, Fl., a certificate of accounting from Sanford-Brown College, an AA from Hill College in Hillsboro, Tx., and am currently 3/4 of the way to a BS in History w/ teaching certification at UTA.
I began teaching in the Sunday School setting. Although this is quite different from teaching for schools; I did learn a lot about motivation to learn, and what does, and what does not, work. From there I moved on to home school my own children. This I continued from K till High School. Once again, I learned as much as the children, especially about learning styles. One student needs to be pushed to excell; While another will achieve the same results only through encouragement and rewards. Since that time, I have subbed in the local public schools. From this I have learned motivational keys to children of various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. You may notice a common thread running through this narrative. In every setting, in whatever discipline I have taught students, I have learned from them, as well as vice versa. I believe that this is a key factor. I am looking to develop lifelong learners, who have curiousity and a love of knowledge. It is my experience that this attribute must be caught as well as taught.
My teaching style is a combination of rote memory and the socratic method. I use rote because a student must have a basic set of facts upon which to draw, before critical thinking can take place. Without this foundation, you can have an interesting "rap session", but little learning is taking place. Once relevant facts are firmly ingrained, however, the now competent student can easily be guided into applying reason and backing it up with data transferred from one discipline to another.
In order for this to work, however, there has to be trust and a partnership between tutor, student, and parents. This is why I do not tutor online. We must get to know each other. I must learn what makes your student tick. We must all be accountable to each other. At least, this is my philosophy. If it is yours also, then success will be the inevitable result.
