While tutoring is usually done so a student can pass an assignment, test, or course, I believe that the experience should also be rewarding, fun, and instill a sense of fullfillment. Often, information is learned for recall for one assignment or test; students memorize information for one test or assignment, complete that assignment, and quickly forget the information. I believe in a different approach. I believe in teaching information in a way that is not based on memorization, but instead on application to the overall subject and real-life. I use a variety of methods when tutoring based on students' particular learning styles. No two students learn information the same way; each student has a unique way of learning. I use lessons that integrate hands-on activities, visual aids, technology, and other engaging, interesting techniques. I believe that information should be presented in a way that is interesting to students; in a way that helps students apply the information to real life and understand why the information is important. Students are often reluctant to learn because they do not understand why they need to know the information. I believe that it is important for a student to understand why they need to know what they are learning, and how they can apply it in their life now or in the future. Constant interaction is also an important part of the learning process. I believe both the tutor and student should be active participants; neither should be a passive participant simply taking in information that the other gives out. I also base my style of teaching off of student response. The student's input and opinion is very important to me, and I believe that a student should feel comfortable and able to ask questions. No question is a "bad" question, and I will work at whatever pace the student needs me to.
