I am a college-level instructor of English and ESL, and I am working on my PhD in English Literature; I am a very encouraging tutor, and my goal is to give students confidence in their own abilities. I typically work from texts, right alongside the student I am tutoring -- if you do not have one you are working with, I use specific grammar, writing, TOEFL, and Classical Greek texts that I am familiar with. I also have tutored the GRE, SAT, and GMAT, but my focus is typically not on the math portions of those exams. I am a writing teacher, so while I do tutor math at lower levels, I prefer not to tutor Trig or Geometry.
Students tend to say that our time together is extraordinarily productive, particularly if we are working on a specific assignment together, so I always recommend letting me know if you are working on something. We don't have to just work through a text, and you'll probably learn more if you're applying it directly to something you're working on (application essays for college, a cover letter for a job, etc.).
I have tutored in middle schools, privately for highschool, middle school, and college students, and on several college campuses over the last five years. Whether the subject is Psychology, Sociology, Classical Greek for beginners, middle school math, or polishing an essay about Chaucer, I have probably done something similar with another student -- you'll get the benefit of years of experience, and I'll teach you all the "tricks" I have learned along the way!
Whatever your needs are, together we can make sure you get the time and attention that you need. Get in touch with me, and we can figure out exactly when and where to begin. I am willing to travel to a public coffeeshop or library if it is easily to get to on the Metro -- otherwise, we can meet near my university, on the red line near Union Station, in the student center. I look forward to hearing from you!
